With more than 210,000-212,000 hectares under cultivation, Dak Lak is one of Vietnam's two largest coffee-growing provinces. Following the 2025 provincial mergers, the new Lam Dong province took the national lead by area with more than 319,000 hectares, placing Dak Lak second - though it remains Vietnam's Robusta coffee capital and its main coffee processing and trading hub. Annual output exceeds 500,000-520,000 tons, accounting for over 30% of national production, while coffee alone contributes more than 50% of the province's total export revenue.
Nationally, Vietnam's 2024-2025 coffee crop year set a historic record, with exports of more than 1.55 million tons - up just 1.8% in volume - yet revenue surged to over $8.4 billion, a 55.5% jump from the previous year and the highest figure on record. The average export price reached $5,610 per ton, up 52.7%, reflecting a sharp rise in the value of Vietnamese coffee on global markets. In the 2023-2024 crop year alone, Dak Lak exported 264,404 tons - 17.9% of the national total - to 61 markets, earning over $915 million, or roughly 16.9% of Vietnam's total coffee export revenue.
Effective July 1, 2025, Dak Lak province officially merged with Phu Yen province to form a new Dak Lak spanning 18,096.4 square kilometers with a population of 3,346,853 under Resolution 202/2025/QH15, with Buon Ma Thuot City chosen as the administrative and political center. A key reason was the plan to develop Buon Ma Thuot into a core urban hub and global coffee center for the new province. The 9th Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Festival 2025 ran from March 9-13, 2025, with 17 official activities including trade exhibitions, international trade conferences, and the groundbreaking of a Trung Nguyen Legend coffee factory.
Buon Ma Thuot's dual role - as both the new province's administrative-political center and its designated global coffee hub - is fueling urbanization and infrastructure growth across the city core. Capital flows tied to the coffee sector, which generates over 50% of the province's export revenue, along with visitors drawn to events like the Coffee Festival, are expected to drive rising demand for housing, offices, and commercial real estate in the urban center. That dynamic gives investors reason to expect land values in central Buon Ma Thuot to keep climbing in the years ahead.
